It was the third day of my trip from Saranac Lake to Logan, Utah and I had traveled less than 1,000 miles. I awoke in my worn out dome tent at about 5 a.m., feeling the steady wind off the shore of Lake Eerie in Port Clinton, Ohio.
In my younger days, I'd always heard horror stories about pollution on this Great Lake, but I was determined to squeeze into my six-day trip as many natural wonders as a human could absorb. I had seen the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame already, and I was on pace to encounter "middle America" in its truest forms within the hour.
A trip like this depletes rapidly into a series of to do lists. When you first start out, you think to yourself what fun it will be to discover the true America in all its glory. Then, somewhere between Peoria and Des Moines, it dawns on you that the true America is pretty much just like high school: full of people you'd just as soon avoid, with no end in sight.
I prepared to camp on the lake, ringing the bell to the attendant's trailer twice before my urban catcalls retrieved her from her back yard. She took my traveler's check with a look of suspicion and asked me why I'd come all the way from New York (she noticed my license plates) to sleep next to Lake Eerie.
"The walleye capital of America," I answered.
She knew as well as I did that Port Clinton was one of dozens of American destinations claiming that title.
"Could you recommend somewhere to get food?" I asked.
Just then her husband emerged from the back yard, where I could have sworn they were cooking an entire cow.
"You mean a restaurant or a grocery store?" he asked.
I didn't have the heart to admit I only wanted to buy some beer and a beef stick.
"A grocery store," I said. "Got one?"
"One mile down the road on the right."
In the grocery store, I discovered the most dazzling assortment of alcoholic schwill I'd ever seen. There must have been 100 varieties of beer, not one costing more than $3.50 for a six-pack.
That night I slept like a baby ... who's getting acupuncture with a rusty needle. The sight of a nuclear power plant across the water gave me some food for thought, but the main problem was the wind, which tossed my tent around all night.
It should come as no surprise that after a quick dirt bath on the beach at 5 a.m., I departed Port Clinton in a hurry. Shortly after beginning my day, I turned south in order to avoid Chicago. It would be nothing but two-lane roads for the entire day, through Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Farm country.
As a former Vermonter, I'm no stranger to the American farm. The only difference is that in Vermont, most of the crops are harvested to fight glaucoma.
It may sound melodramatic to say that my time on the prairie felt like the longest days of my life. But the truth is that each day was an hour longer than I was used to because of the time zone changes I drove through. The only benefit of driving from a town where it was 11 a.m. to a town where it was suddenly 10 was that I mysteriously found myself on time for the McDonald's breakfast menu.
The most memorable aspect of the prairie was the interminable sun insisting that human comfort is not appropriate on the road. It mocked me for my weakness at every rest stop and chided me to go on, daring me to attempt an escape.
Each day on the prairie, I felt as if I was racing the sun across the vast sky. And each day, coincidentally around noon, the sun would pass me by, edging me lightly as if to say, "tag, you're it."

When I was a little girl, I used to watch this cartoon called Wally Gator. And because of Wally, I wanted to go to Florida to meet him! And one fine day, my father asked if we wanted to go to Florida for good! (I was moving to Florida! I was going to be Wally's neighbor!)
So, I used to take my father Florida camping every weekend in hope of finding Wally. We never did find him, but we became good campers. I became more fond of my father.. This is what camping does, doesn't it? It creates a bond in the family!
So why should you camp in Florida?
I have camped in many places for 15 years and Florida is the best among them. This "sun shine place" is warm and cozy. With a long coast line, you can enjoy the beaches and the woods. Plus there are many things like boating, hiking, bird watching, surfing, fishing and a lot more.
Where should you start camping in Florida?
Well, Florida is a place full of beautiful camping sites. The two best sites (two of my favorites) are Anastasia state park and the Big lagoon state park. Both of these parks have beautiful beaches and large camp sites. The smell of nature and the fresh cool breeze on the beach opens up the senses (I hope I don't sound like a TV commercial). The kids love it, the moms love it (because its clean), and the dads love it!
They say When in Florida, Camp like the Floridians! And the most Important thing while Florida camping is a RV. (if you don't own one, rent one!) Places like Astor landing, Camp'n Aire (Lake Wales), Crystal Isles (Crystal River) Are some of the places where you would just love RV camping.
There are many more locations for Camping in Florida. All you have to do is take a few minutes to look them up. And GO!
For first timers:
1. While Florida camping for the first time, take a guide with you. He can help you make the most of it.
2. If you are not into guides, then you should remember a few things
3. Pack lots of easy to cook food. Some camp sites don't usually have stores nearby.

As the owner of 2 German Shepherd dogs, I was planning to take a few days get-a-way along California Highway #1. Until I actually started making my plans, I thought I would have a very hard time finding a hotel that would take the two large dogs, but was pleasantly surprised to find there is lots of information to help vacationers, with pets find the right hotel to stay at.

My search found many places where I could stay with my two dogs. I got the name and location of places that accepted pets, phone numbers, the weight of pets they wouldl accept, how many could stay at one time and the cost. The Fees were listed according to the weight of the pet and I was also given, the hotels charges per night for the accommodations and in some instances I was able to make my reservation online.

After reading all they had to offer, as well as recommendations of prior guests, which were posted, on the different hotel sites, I chose the Best Western Cavalier Inn.

This hotel has all non-smoking rooms with either king or two queen beds. The rate varies depending on the location of the rooms. Choices ranged from rooms right on the bluff, with the ocean just 20 feet below, To oceanfront rooms, 100 feet back from the ocean bluff and rooms with a view of the ocean. Many of the rooms come with wood burning fireplaces, soaking tubs, TV's, internet access and sliding glass doors that lead to private patios, from which you will have a front row seat to the spectacular sunsets. Cars are parked right outside the entrance to the rooms downstairs, and for guests upstairs, their parking is convenient to the stairs leading to the top floor.

The beautiful landscaped grounds have panoramic ocean views, are lighted in the evenings with fire pits, that have seats nearby, and which are also lit, to keep off the evening chill that is common along the coast. There is lots of lawn areas and pathways for leashed pets to walk and play on. The hotel even furnishes the doggie scuppers.

Getting to this location, along highway 1, there are many swimming beaches one can stop at, or drive out among the sand dunes, go boating or fishing. If it is the right season, whales cavorting off-shore. A short detour Inland, there are lots of wineries, open for tours, wine tasting or to purchase a bottle of your favorite.

Koh Chang Encounter

Being new to Thailand and having just survived a few days in chaotic Bangkok, we were not sure what to expect when we arrived on the Island of Koh Chang. The easiest way to get to Koh Chang is by taking an hour plane ride from Bangkok via Bangkok Air. Our first surprise on this flight was the free sandwich. Free food, seriously? The second was the thatch roofed airport that looked more like a tropical lodge. Ok, I think this will do. Many wonderful surprises were in store, but nothing more amazing than spending the afternoon at the Elephant Camp.

We had heard about the Elephant Camps in Thailand, which were given mixed reviews. We heard a heart-breaking story about a camp that had a baby elephant last year. They allowed so many tourists to pay to feed it that it became ill and died. We also heard about owners that beat their elephants so that they could learn unnatural tricks, like painting with their trunks. Nothing that we wanted to encourage or even to witness. We spoke to the owner of our resort who introduced us to a camp that rescued elephants from Northern Thailand. He explained that each elephant had a "Mahout" or trainer for life that lived with it in the camp in the jungle for its entire life. No elephant acts, just jungle rides to a pool where the elephant can take a swim in a cool pool and get scrubbed down by tourists with shower brushes. We signed up for a visit the next day.

When we arrived at the camp there were elephants ambling in the periphery all being jockeyed by a barefooted Mahout. As the group gathered some of the elephants came in to investigate as pineapple wedges were given to all of the guests. I am the sort that tends to feed the dog from the table (if you have ever been to my house you would be immediately aware of this as evidenced by my poorly behaved dog around meal time). I can tell you though that there is nothing subtle about elephants. I brought an offering to the terrace railing and, with permission from the Mahout, offered up a slice. The large trunk extended up, offer accepted. Glee!

Feeding an elephant and riding it however, were two different things in my estimation. Allow me at this moment to admit a fear of heights and a tendency to like to feel in control of situations. Neither of these leanings, I was sure, were going to be well served on top of the elephant. Despite my concerns and sweaty palms, I entered the "loading platform" and awkwardly climbed onto the bench atop the elephant. While I adjusted to the situation I noted that my husband was not suffering the same anxiety and was instead grinning like a little boy. Good for him. Are we having fun yet?

The first thing I noted was that the elephants skin felt like a football with bristles. Our cheerful Mahout/Guide explained that the elephant's skin was actually several inches thick and that carrying our weight was quite easy for him. Luckily our chatty host was a wealth of information and listening to him served as a distraction from my anxiety. With each step of the elephant we swung left and right and I tried to make little show of my glances around our "saddle" and concern about the potential for it slide off leaving us under one of dumbo's massive feet. The Mahout continuously tapped the elephants ears with his toes and explained that this was how he actually steered the elephant. Tap on the right, turn right. Tap on the left, turn left, etc. We asked then why he carried a stick and he mentioned that at times this was needed to get the elephants attention, but that you don't want to hit an elephant too much because then it would be an angry elephant, and "no one can control an angry elephant". Noted.

At this point our guide explained that the elephant that we were riding had been with them for 2 years, and that he was his trainer because he was the Mahout for all of the "naughty elephants." Hmmm. At this point of our journey we aimed toward a muddy path that led downward toward the stream. It was very steep and the elephant needed to walk with one foot in front of the other in order to navigate the path. Kind of like an oversize ballerina wearing snow shoes down a slide. Sensing my concern the Mahout explained that "elephants not like to fall down." I took this as somewhat good news.

We made it down the bank and my husband had a fantastic time jumping in the water and having a go at dumbo with the scrub brush. Dumbo seemed to like it too, although that didn't stop him from showing us how to use his trunk as a water cannon. Good times!

We made it back to camp and the elephants lined up to accept bananas. "Elephant always hungry" we were told. At that moment I learned that because elephants' eyes are situated at the side of their head they have some difficulty seeing what is directly in front of them. This resulted in a frenzy of trunks from these massive creatures greedily waving in front of me seeking out a snack. It was surreal. But fun.

Koh Chang had many other surprises and was by far our favorite spot during our trip to Thailand. Amazing beaches, fresh seafood, fire dancers, floating fishing villages and elephants....perfection.

Is Thailand a Viable Place to Retire

Thailand has been my home for six years now, and one thing that I've found to be true is that many things change, but overall - things remain the same. I'll try to explain that further to you below.

The basic truths about living in Thailand stay the same year after year - so, living here is not so much a question of whether or not you can. It's more a question of whether or not you want to continue to play the game and go through all the motions required to stay because they change frequently.

Foreigners can move to Thailand under one of the visa options and live for 3-12 months at a time before needing to consider renewing them. Unless you have a year-long visa to stay, it's rather bothersome to keep figuring out where you will go for a visa run out of the country, or which visa you will try to get that will enable you to remain living in the country. If you are retired and you have a few hundred thousand Thai Baht, or you can prove 40,000 Thai Baht income per month that originates from outside the country - then, at the moment, you can stay and get a non-immigrant visa based on that situation.

The details of getting visas - the amounts you must have for retirement visas, the location you must go to get double entry visas rather than single entry visas, and many other variables change all the time. What doesn't change is that foreigners can consistently come to Thailand and live for basically as long as they want as long as they jump through the visa hoops immigration gives us.

Another issue that changes fast and often for foreigners considering retiring here, is that of safety in Thailand. Bangkok has recently been under fire as political parties joust for supremacy and control of the country since the ex- prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra fled the country. Bullets flew in Bangkok, grenades went off, and fires were set. Bangkok routinely goes through these unsafe periods, but they always calm down - until the next time.

Thailand is basically safe, and remains safe, but there are times when those in Bangkok will need to play it very safe and avoid the areas under fire.

The teaching situation for retired foreigners that teach English has changed rather drastically lately. Foreigners are now required to be licensed by the Ministry of Education in Thailand. This is a major change, and has prompted vast numbers of barely qualified English teachers to flee the country for greener grass. The pay has not gone up for teachers in Thailand in years, and many of us are left wondering if Thailand really wants to educate their students - the next generations, to a high degree.

Yet, teaching is always available in the country, and those teachers that come from abroad and jump through the hoops can teach just like they always have. "Same-same, but different" is a saying here in Thailand, and it applies in many situations.

If you are considering retiring in Thailand or moving and trying it out before deciding to retire you should live for a while in both Bangkok and in another city, perhaps in the south or northeast to get a well-rounded picture of what life is like in both locations. Life is vastly different in parts outside Bangkok, and I myself find it worlds better away from the capital.

Assateaques sister island, Chincoteaque is a booming island where the natives respect both the sea and the wild creatures. Every summer, during the last week of July, a group of locals go over to Assateaque Island, rounding up the wild ponies and swimming them across the water to Chincoteaque where a portion of the foals are auctioned off. A trip to Chincoteaque during the Pony Penning Days is one that you will want to repeat over and over again.

Taganana - Tenerife

Overview

One of the oldest settlements in the Tenerife Island is Taganana. It is the most peaceful remote village in Tenerife but it is very difficult to reach this village. Nature lovers and walkers find this village a paradise. It is situated in the municipality - Santa Cruz de Tenerife - on the Tenerife Island. The population of this village was 592 in the year 2009. It is connected by road to Las Mercedes and San Andres.

The travel to this fishing village was possible either by boat or foot until the year 1960. A tunnel was made to solve this problem and at preset road journey is possible through this tunnel. But the new road has lots of winds, twist and turns, thereby making the journey somewhat difficult. This effort has facilitated traveling to this little but beautiful village. It has steep mountain slopes that descend from the mountains - Anaga - to the Atlantic Ocean.

The small village square is next to the parish church which you could explore. Two most important things in this place are - Cultural Centre Parranda and Malvasia wine.

Climate

The average temperatures in a year are as follows:

1.Maximum - 24 °C in the month of August
2.Minimum - 17 °C in January

Art and Culture

One of the buildings that have been preserved in the village Taganana is the temple that has been dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows and it is one of the ancient buildings on the Tenerife Island in addition to the small houses. The interiors have 16th century Flemish style and it is a valuable treasure of art. You can see the Anaga massif's natural wealth - lush forests, untouched beaches - around Taganana.

Sports and Entertainment

If you take a stroll around the narrow streets of Taganana, you will see the old simple Canarian houses. San Roque and Benijo pebble beaches are highly popular with local surfers and there are a few bars and restaurants in this place.

High winds along the coast of Taganana could be awesome and tourists should be careful. Even when the sea is calm, there could be sudden dangerous currents and it is advisable to take advice from local people before taking a bath.

You can hike from Benijo to the village of El Draguillo - it got its name from a surviving dragon tree - along a dirt road that hugs the cliffs above the sea.

The economy of this village is driven by agricultural products - potatoes, wine crops, yams and sweet potatoes.

What You Need to Know About Airport Parking

The majority of people travelling from UK airports prefer to use their car rather than take public transport because despite the government's best efforts for us to use public transport travelling by car is far more convenient and allows a greater level of control.

This means you will need to park your car and for most, this will mean simply turning up at the airport and parking your car.

Wrong, this is exactly what the airport wants you to do because they operate two completely different pricing systems called the gate price or turn rate and the pre-booked price.

The reason why the pre-booked price came into being is because the off airport car parks to encourage business were able to substantially undercut the gate price.

I have just taken the price for using one of the multi storey car parks at Manchester airport that are adjacent to each terminal and the price per day is a staggering £27. Imagine coming back off your 15 day stay in Greece to be faced by a bill of £405. But to be fair most people know not to use a multi-storey unless you are just dropping off or collecting. However, if you pre-book the price drops to £89.99, now that's what I call a saving.

So we now move to the cost of using the long stay which charges £64 for 7 days and £6.50 for every 24 hours thereafter. For a 15 day stay the cost amounts to £122.50 yet if you pre-book the same parking the cost reduces to £59.99 or £69.99 depending upon the terminal, which is still a huge saving.

At this time of the year the off airport car parks are operating at full capacity and their price is virtually the same as the on airport price, however, if you look a couple of months in advance the price between the long stay on airport price and off airport car parks is a saving of about £20.

There are a wide variety of resources for consumers looking for a home to rent. However, the terminology used can be confusing. What is the difference between an apartment rental and a condominium? These terms are often used interchangeably and may not have any noticeable effect on the tenant. Simply looking at the outside of a building, it is impossible to tell the difference. Legally, there are a few vital differences.

Condominium (or "condo") is a legal term that specifies a particular piece of property (usually an individual unit) is individually or privately owned. The shared areas of the building are associated with the individual ownership, but maintained and operated by an association of owners that act on behalf of the whole. Examples of shared areas include hallways, gym facility, parking garages, heating systems and elevators. These associations are often called "strata councils" and empower the owners to make decisions and be responsible for maintenance of the building. Condominium rentals do not usually put tenants on the strata council. That is reserved for individual owners and/or landlords.

In contrast, leased flat usually exists in a building owned by a single developer or landlord. The tenants of the building are all responsible to the same entity and that developer or landlord is solely responsible for maintenance of the shared areas. This is very different than a condominium building in which each unit is owned individually and may be occupied by either the owner or a rental tenant. Shares of an apartment building may be offered to the tenant as part of a co-op.

Consumers looking for property on hire often can choose to rent a privately owned house or a developer-owned rental flat. There are pros and cons to each choice and the tenant must weigh their concerns and priorities with care.

Condominiums that are rented by private owners often give the tenant access to a single landlord when they have concerns about maintenance. However, this landlord may not have much experience with building maintenance or tenant management. In contrast, an apartment on lease is almost always managed by a larger company with several landlords for one property. This gives apartment rental buildings consistency and experience in their care of tenants. Renters are happy to know their maintenance concerns or questions will be met promptly and professionally.

You are thinking about taking a great vacation to Gran Canaria, but how do you go about choosing a great hotel to stay in? You have never been there, and you don't know anyone who has. You don't want to get stuck in a fleabag hotel with crummy service, and you don't want to pay too much for your room. Read my tips for ending up in a great hotel in Gran Canaria or anywhere else you want to go.

Tip Number One.

Visit several hotel booking sites, such as hotels.com, Priceline, Orbitz, and several other sites of that nature. If you don't know the name of any others besides the ones I have mentioned, just type in "hotels, " into your search bar and visit some of the sites that come up. When you visit the site such as hotels.com, what you will want to do is type in Gran Canaria as your search, and see what hotels come up and what the price ranges are. After you visit some of the sites you will start to get a in the idea of what hotels are available, in which areas, and what the price range of the different hotels are. You can confine your search to the types of motels that you are looking for, in other words, don't look for two star hotels if what you are really interested in staying in is a five-star hotel, and no need to look at five-star hotels if your budget only runs to two-star.

Tip Number Two.

When you are searching on the hotel sites for the different types of hotels, pay attention to things that are important to you. If it is important to you that the hotel have a pool, then you can put that into your search request, or just skim over the ones that do not have a pool. Likewise, you can do a search for family-friendly hotels, beach hotels, half board or full board hotels or any other features that are important to you. No sense wasting your time looking at hotels that will not fit the bill for you. And of course you will want to make sure to put in which area of Gran Canaria you want to stay in. You will want to know in advance if you want to stay in La Palma area or Playa del Inlges area.

Tip Number Three.

When you have gotten an idea of what the price range is for the type of hotel you are searching for, then you can move on to researching each individual hotel. Choose five or six hotels that sound really good to you, and that you are happy with the price with to do your research on. Then head on over to trip advisor, and the plug in the name of the hotel that you are searching for. This is a great way to get reviews of hotels from unbiased people. You will want to read through a few of them, so that you get a general idea of how most people feel, not just how one person feels. You also have to be able to read between the lines a little, as some people are not happy with anything, and some people are happy no matter what kind of place they are staying in. If, however, you are looking for a family-friendly hotel, and a lot of the reviews tell about how this is a party hotel with partiers roaming the hotel until 3 or 4 AM, then you will know this is not the type of hotel that you are looking for and you can move on. But you do not need to put too much emphasis on someone saying the beds were terribly uncomfortable, unless you read the same thing in several of the reviews. You will also want to pay attention to the comments about how far you are from the beach, or if shopping is close by. If you think you are going to be in the heart of the action of Playa del Ingles, the review may tip you off that you are further away than you want to be.

Tip Number Four.

If for some reason you do not find a review of the hotel that you are looking for at trip advisor, you can always again use Google or whatever search engine you use. Just type the name of the hotel into your search bar and hit enter, and start looking for sites that sound as if they may be giving a review. You are not looking for a site that will allow you to book this hotel at this time, instead be looking for words like "had a fabulous time at this hotel.", or "Don't let anyone talk you into staying here." If you find phrases like that, you can pretty much be assured that you will get a review of that hotel on that site. It may take you to some type of forum or other site where you can read someone's opinion of this hotel. You can also gather a lot of general information about Gran Canaria in this fashion, as people will not only talk about the hotel, but also their entire vacation.

Tip Number Five.

Now that you have done some research on the type of hotel you want, the location, and read some reviews, it's now time to go about booking the hotel that you have chosen. You have already done some price research, so you will know about what you can expect to pay for the hotel that you have chosen. Say for example that you have chosen Ifa Dunamar, and you know that the price per night is running between 75 and 100 on the sites you've checked so far. Now you want to go back to your search engine, and plug in the name of the hotel that you have chosen one more time. This time, instead of looking for words that will lead you to reviews, you are looking for a site where you can book that hotel. Don't forget to go to that hotels site, to check the price that they are offering. You can sometimes get a better price by going to a hotel's home page, however, that is not always true. You might have better luck finding a site that will offer you a lower price on this hotel by typing in the words "sale", "cheap", or something similar, along with the hotel name.

Don't forget that money is not always the only incentive to book at a particular site. Sometimes, you can get added value on one site over another, by the incentives they are offering, such as free breakfast, or, in the case of Gran Canaria, maybe they will include a camel ride through the Dunes of Maspalomas. If one site is offering the hotel for $75, and another hotel is offering it for $80, but includes free camel rides for everyone in the room, this may be a better deal, especially if you are taking a family.

I have given you some tips and strategies for finding yourself a great hotel in Gran Canaria. With just a little bit of time doing some research, you can be assured of getting not only a great hotel, but a great price or value for your money. So go ahead and start planning that great Gran Canaria holiday today.

The way you present yourself while in Thailand is critical to how you will be viewed by Thai people, especially Thai Officials. There are Four Tips in presentation that the traveler to Thailand would do well to observe.

Many foreigners come from countries where the freedom to behave anyway they like is accepted. Any difficulties caused by the authorities are treated as intrusions, and responded to accordingly. Thai Government Officials have a much higher status than they do in countries like New Zealand, Australia, the USA, Canada, and the UK. It is important to understand this difference when dealing with them. Everyone, including the foreigners, benefit if foreigners show respect. The foreigner must understand that this is not an attack on their self esteem. It is not about freedom to express yourself or your rights, it is about giving face to people who are important within Thailand.

Often, foreigners' reference point for their behaviour is whether something similar would happen in their own countries. It is unwise to use this as a reference point in Thailand. It is a unique country with a highly developed culture of its own.

Here are Four Tips that will help you in Thailand:

Firstly, learn how to correctly wai Thai people. It is easy to learn the four basic wais. You will probably need only two of them. The wai is the joining of your palms together and the raising of your hands to different positions in front of your face. The fingers point up, with the thumbs closest to your head. When contacting Thai Officials it is best to wai by putting your fingers higher and close to your nose. You can also bend your head slightly. In Thailand, government officials have a high status, while businessmen have lower status unless they are very rich. Very highly placed government officials have a very, very high status, and you will probably not meet them. Your wai will usually be appreciated, and be to your benefit in doing what you have come to do. Also wai Thai Policemen in the same manner.

In restaurants, and with service people in Thailand the wai with the finger tips at the height of your chin is recommended. You wai could be higher, if you so chose. However, do not become 'wai-happy' which is wai-ing Thai people all the time. This will cause amusement than anything else. Wai-happiness is common when people come to Thailand for the first time.

Secondly, the clothes that you are wearing determine your rank or class in Thailand. A suit will mean that you are a professional, well off, and that you have status within your society, and in Thailand as well. If you wear a tee shirt, especially one with no sleeves, you will project a low status, and will generally be treated accordingly, unless perhaps, you speak Thai or you are at the beach. The tee shirt, sandals, and shorts look, popular with New Zealanders and Australians, classifies you as lower class or perhaps in a separate class as a foreigner.

I have a suit which I wear for any contact with Thai Officials. There is a big difference in the way I am treated by Thai people when I am wearing my suit. I have a friend, Malcolm, who has lived in Thailand, and is currently living in Australia. He will put on a tie and suit whenever he comes to, or leaves Thailand. He says it is important, and he is treated very well on flights, where he is sometimes upgraded.

Thirdly, do not get angry under any circumstances. Thai people are more relaxed and subscribe to the Buddhist Philosophy. Becoming angry will have no benefits for the foreigner. You will be considered a 'jai roon'; a person who can not control their emotions. Undeveloped emotionally. Thais value the quality of 'jai yen yen'; staying calm under pressure. There is a 'best way' if you become angry in Thailand. This is to relax your whole body and mind. Then smile sweetly, and calmly state your case if the person speaks English. Thai people has this 'jai yen yen' because in the Buddhist view of things, they believe that the problem they are confronted with, is probably not that important in the scheme of things... and they are probably right!

Fourthly, Thai people are very shy with foreigners if they don't speak English. This is especially the case outside Bangkok in places like Isaan. They will be interested in you because you are different but their shyness may prevent them from approaching you. It is very good to smile at people generally, and particularly if you see them everyday. An attempt to talk to them, even with only hand gestures is a good way to break the ice. If you smile, your smile will nearly always be returned. Thais are a truly warm people and they will eagerly help you to learn about their culture.

Thais have a great love of Sanuk, or fun. If you watch a few of the Thai Variety Shows on TV you will quickly appreciate the Thai love of humour and having fun. If you enter into the spirit of things in Thailand while observing these Four Tips discussed, you will have so much fun... you may never want to leave!

As we count down to the departure date for our Summer vacation, we often overlook a very important task - that is to make sure home security is taken care of in our absence. Here are 7 tips for home security while you are living it up at your holiday destination:
1. Arrange for a relative or family friend to collect mail and newspapers while you are away - this one action is a deterrent to any burglar. If away for an extended period, you can get your mail held at the mail exchange and cancel newspapers.
2. Make sure your pets are taken care of properly. You can get a friend to take care of them at their property, get neighbors to feed cats or fish, or book your cat or dog into proper boarding kennels.
3. Arrange for your neighbor or relative to put out your garbage on your proper garbage collection day. It is obvious to burglars when your trash is the only one on the sidewalk for days.
4. Together with credit/cash cards, make sure you have proper identification such as drivers' licenses, for each driver, especially if you are going to hire a car. Do not write down Pin numbers - memorize them. Make two copies of all identification, passports, drivers' licenses, credit cards and travelers' checks. Leave one copy with trusted family member and take the other with you.
5. Copies of the proper health and auto insurance cards and details are very handy. Travel insurance is a must if traveling overseas - never leave home without some arrangement. Shop around though, as there are plenty of great deals online.
6. Inform friends and family of your vacation details, especially a phone contact and copy of itinerary if you have one. In the event that something happens back home you can be easily reached, especially if there is no cellphone coverage.
7. Check all windows, doors and alarms - you do not want to get down the road and wonder whether you have closed all the windows, set the alarm properly and secured the locks. Travelers keen to get away have even wondered if they have left the iron on in their haste to get on the road!

Shepherd’s Shemozzle

When walking New Zealand you can’t fail to notice the sheer number of sheep. The country has around 9 sheep to every 1 human; but, in a country full of sheep, where are all the shepherds? Come October, they’re all in Hunterville taking part in the annual Shepherd’s Shemozzle. The Shepherd’s Shemozzle is a race run by locals, but until the day of the event the locals don’t know what’s expected of them. Last year’s event saw locals competing to eat dried weetabix and bull’s testicles; could we be sensing a theme to New Zealand’s festivals?

Englefield Bathtub Derby

Taking to the streets whilst lying in your bathtub might be your biggest nightmare, but in New Zealand it’s just another of their bizarre festivals. In November, on Takapuna Bay, a fleet of unusually decorated bath-tubs takes to the water in a whole host of different shapes and designs. There are three separate races that entrants can compete in; a motorised boat race, a sail boat race or a pedal and paddle boat race. In the evening, there’s a barbecue on the beach and a series of games like beach volleyball that will appeal to the whole family.

Matariki Festival

When you’re walking New Zealand in June you’ll probably come across the Maori New Year celebrations. The Matariki Festival in Auckland is a month of celebrations based on Maori culture and heritage. Events that guests might come across include traditional dance, exhibitions and tree-planting ceremonies.

Matariki occurs when the seven sisters are spotted and the first new moon is sighted, so the dates can change on an annual basis. However, the usual dates are from mid-June to the beginning of July.

Queenstown Winter Festival

When walking New Zealand’s Queenstown, you’ll notice a hubbub of culture, sophistication and the arts; that is unless you visit the city during the annual Winter Festival in July. At this time of the year the locals celebrate with a host of wacky events from frisbee tournaments to the dog derby, where farmers and their dogs are required to slide down the snow on their bottoms. Lake swimming in freezing waters is a test of strength for the locals and the festival culminates in some serious partying.
